Residential Reservoir, Blue Banana 101 Lucia Mombaur

Fresh, clean water is one of Earth’s most valuable resources yet it is often wasted in buildings where all functions rely on potable water, regardless of necessity. This project proposes a vertical water reservoir that filters its contents through layered materials, simulating natural mineral filtration in sediment. Acting as both strainer and storage, the system produces varying levels of water purity as it descends through the structure.
The architectural concept uses this filtration gradient to match water quality with appropriate domestic functions: from irrigation and flushing to laundry, bathing, and finally drinking. The funnel-shaped filter defines the building’s form narrowing for habitation and widening for water collection. Six identical five-story units accommodate shared living, with each floor designed according to the water`s usability: a rooftop stone landscape for gathering and relaxation, descending through plant watering, toilet use, laundry, showering, and ending in a ground- floor kitchen with potable water. External hallways connect private rooms, separating circulation from the water-based core.
