More Than a Bridge Tim Roßner

The topic „More Than a Bridge“ demands a future-oriented approach to the question of how the space created by a bridge over the water can be utilized beyond simple crossing. The open, consistent steel structure extends over the entire length of the Rhine, thus distributing the functions along the bridge.
The construction serves as a significant infrastructure between the “Kaserne Basel” and the opposite shore, yet it remains transparent in parts only used for walking due to its open structure. Visually and functionally, it is framed by two sculptural staircases on both sides of the banks.
Lengthwise, the bridge is divided into two parts. It allows crossing on both levels along its entire length, with public usage arranged in the wider, northern section.
The areas dedicated to sports, culture, and public gardens are integrated as modules into the consistent structure. This enables flexible arrangement and adaptation of the use in the future, in case the city’s expectations of the bridge change over time.
