Of Other Spaces, reactivating the western boarder of the Zoological Garden of Karlsruhe

The Zoological garden of Karlsruhe is currently a monopolistic place for consumption. Despite its central location bordering on the Karlsruhe main station and the city centre, it is only accessible to those who can afford it.
The project proposes two approaches that repair the urban landscape by reusing existing structures. Both designs treat the topic of perception and introduce non-consumerist uses to the neighbourhood. They reactivate the western border of the Zoological garden.
The addition of a maze to the existing hedge garden creates a layer betweenBahnhofstraße and the parc. This allows visitors to immerse themselves into different sensory installations – providing a playful and relaxing experience.
The building treats the topic of perception in relation to the water as it is located at the Gondoletta boat station at the Stadtgartensee. The shape of the roof allows and restricts the view on the lake and it amplifies the sound of rain. It is a place that makes you slow down, where travellers can pass time and neighbourhood events can be held.
