Transition of Void explores the question of how differently emptiness can feel.
The building forms the transition between two contrasting urban spaces: the urban neighbourhood around the railway station and a natural landscape featuring existing woodland. As a link between these two worlds, it acts as a mediator.
This mediation can already be experienced spatially as one passes through. Coming from the city, the route first leads beneath a massive structure. Low ceilings and large volumes convey a sense of confinement and heaviness. Further along, the spaces open up, the floor slabs rise and eventually disappear completely. In this way, the transition from the dense urban space to the open landscape can be experienced both spatially and atmospherically.
The internal layout follows a sequence of spaces that can be experienced in different ways. It begins with a completely enclosed ‘black box’ serving as a flexible event space for media art, concerts or film screenings. This is followed by an area housing administration, offices, seminar rooms and studios, whose structure is reminiscent of traditional educational buildings. The building then opens out into a spacious, glazed hall with freely suspended galleries. Here, for the first time, workshops and studios benefit from a direct visual and climatic connection to the outdoor space
Ultimately, the structures will disintegrate completely. A treetop walkway will take over as the main access route, leading visitors through the treetops. The exhibition spaces extend across the ground floor, the galleries and the treetop walkway, creating a wide range of opportunities to showcase art to the public.
