Defined by transit landscapes along Federal Highway 36, vast parking lots, and rows upon rows of retail shelves, the site, located in Mühlburg, Karlsruhe, feels almost exchangeable. Movement patterns of users, much like the visual experience, are dominated by signage and guiding lines tailored to car-centric functions. As a consequence of this monotony but also the constant subliminal distractions, visitors perceive the space through the lens of a subconscious autopilot.

To counter this, the design taps into a space embedded in the daily routines of many, using exactly this potential of being highly frequented to enable positive impacts. A sweeping spatial gesture invites exploration, encouraging strolling across ground level and roofscape alike. Framing existing and newly introduced greenery, this layout sparks curiosity and prolongs the experienced contact time during fleeting moments between leaving one’s vehicle and entering stores.

The flora serves a dual purpose: a productive agroforestry cultivation via greenhouse and food forest, alongside a backdrop for daily life engaging both pedestrians and the inhabitants of the apartments below the roof. Sunrooms that frame the individual housing clusters act as thermal and privacy buffers while promoting interaction within these smaller communities.

The housing construction features friction collars to support the intermediate floors. Because these components can be removed without damaging the columns that support the roof, the system allows for adaptive future configurations.
